TKAM #5

Journal Entry #5
Chapters 13-15
Perspective- Aunt Alexandra

I just moved in with Atticus, Jem, and Scout. There’s also always this nigger maid who is always home named Calpurnia. I extract her. I don’t think that she should be working for Atticus anymore because I’m like a compensation of her which is the reason for our fight. Scout always wants to be with Calpurnia also. I heard that Scout and Jem went to an all nigger church with her which made me very uncomfortable. One day Scout was telling Jem about their trip to church with Calpurnia and asked Atticus if she could go again next Sunday, before Atticus could reply I said no which made Scout very angry with me and made her talk back.
The reason I came to Maycomb was to give Scout a mother figure in her life. She acts just like one of the boys. She gets very muddy and full of sand, and is always wearing overalls. I feel bad for Jem and Scout because whenever they are walking down town people are always giving them weird stares since Atticus is defending a nigger, but Atticus is usually infallible. It still feels kind of awkward between me Jem, and Scout but hopefully they will feel closer to me soon.
The other day this boy named Dill ran away from his home in Mississippi. I heard he ran away because his mother and new father did not pay enough attention to him which made me feel very sad. I think Dill should emerge and just tell his parents but until then Atticus and I decided that it’s fine if he stays with us.
Scout and Dill have been playing together a lot lately. Jem usually is in is room reading football magazines while Scout and Dill are outside talking. A week after Dill’s arrival a group of men came outside of our house looking for Atticus. They came to inform Atticus that they will be moving Tom Robinson to a different jail. Atticus did not really like the idea of Tom being moved because he was worried that a mob of people were going to murder him. Atticus and I got into a big fight that same night because I feel like him defending a nigger is a disgrace to our family! Atticus got very upset, and the following night he took his car and drove into town.
The night Atticus drove into town Jem, Scout, and Dill decide to sneak out and follow Atticus. From far distance they all see Atticus sitting outside the Maycomb jail reading a newspaper, and Jem told them they should just leave him alone. Just in that moment they see 4 cars drive into Maycomb and park near the jail, a big group of men get out of the car and tell Atticus to move out of the way, when Atticus says no Scout runs out from her hiding place to notice that the group of men talking to Atticus was the same group that was at their house the night before.
