TKAM #6

C. How do you think the story (what you read so far) would have changed if Scout and Jem had a mother present in their lives? Would it change for the better or for the worse? Explain your thoughts.

If Jem and Scout had a mother in their life I think the book would be much different. It would change for the better and worse I believe. It would change for the better because, Aunt Alexandra would have never even moved in with them in the first place, and Scout would have her mom to talk to when Jem wanted to be alone and when Atticus was at work.
I think that the book would change for the worse if they had a mother because Scout and Jem wouldn’t be out as much which makes the story so interesting. Scout would act much more lady like and dress differently. Also Calpurnia wouldn’t be working for them. The only reason Calpurnia is working for them is so Scout and Jem could have a motherly figure in their life, and if they had a mother they wouldn’t need Cal.
I think that it was a good idea for the author of To Kill a Mockingbird not to give Scout and Jem a mother because the book is very interesting with Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra there. With out a mother Scout acts different then all the other girls which is interesting and makes you want to read more.
