TKAM #7

Choice A: Most of the local people in Maycomb felt that it would be a disgrace for a black person to win in a dispute with any with a white person, so they took Bob Ewell's side. Have you ever been in a situation where someone took a side that they obviously knew was wrong? How did this make you feel?

I have been in a situation when my parents have taken my sisters side over mine even though they knew I was right. It makes me feel frustrated because, I have no one on my side to defend me. It also makes me feel really alone and sad, because I can’t really do anything about it. I felt really bad for Tom Robinson when no one was on his side. Everyone knew he was telling the truth but they were too scared to stand up for him just because of his skin color. I think Maycomb would be a better place to live if they had more people like Atticus, Jem, and Scout. Maycomb would also be better if they had less people like Aunt Alexandra. Aunt Alexandra is really against black people and she thinks that she is better than every back person.

TKAM #6

C. How do you think the story (what you read so far) would have changed if Scout and Jem had a mother present in their lives? Would it change for the better or for the worse? Explain your thoughts.

If Jem and Scout had a mother in their life I think the book would be much different. It would change for the better and worse I believe. It would change for the better because, Aunt Alexandra would have never even moved in with them in the first place, and Scout would have her mom to talk to when Jem wanted to be alone and when Atticus was at work.
I think that the book would change for the worse if they had a mother because Scout and Jem wouldn’t be out as much which makes the story so interesting. Scout would act much more lady like and dress differently. Also Calpurnia wouldn’t be working for them. The only reason Calpurnia is working for them is so Scout and Jem could have a motherly figure in their life, and if they had a mother they wouldn’t need Cal.
I think that it was a good idea for the author of To Kill a Mockingbird not to give Scout and Jem a mother because the book is very interesting with Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra there. With out a mother Scout acts different then all the other girls which is interesting and makes you want to read more.

TKAM #5

Journal Entry #5
Chapters 13-15
Perspective- Aunt Alexandra

I just moved in with Atticus, Jem, and Scout. There’s also always this nigger maid who is always home named Calpurnia. I extract her. I don’t think that she should be working for Atticus anymore because I’m like a compensation of her which is the reason for our fight. Scout always wants to be with Calpurnia also. I heard that Scout and Jem went to an all nigger church with her which made me very uncomfortable. One day Scout was telling Jem about their trip to church with Calpurnia and asked Atticus if she could go again next Sunday, before Atticus could reply I said no which made Scout very angry with me and made her talk back.
The reason I came to Maycomb was to give Scout a mother figure in her life. She acts just like one of the boys. She gets very muddy and full of sand, and is always wearing overalls. I feel bad for Jem and Scout because whenever they are walking down town people are always giving them weird stares since Atticus is defending a nigger, but Atticus is usually infallible. It still feels kind of awkward between me Jem, and Scout but hopefully they will feel closer to me soon.
The other day this boy named Dill ran away from his home in Mississippi. I heard he ran away because his mother and new father did not pay enough attention to him which made me feel very sad. I think Dill should emerge and just tell his parents but until then Atticus and I decided that it’s fine if he stays with us.
Scout and Dill have been playing together a lot lately. Jem usually is in is room reading football magazines while Scout and Dill are outside talking. A week after Dill’s arrival a group of men came outside of our house looking for Atticus. They came to inform Atticus that they will be moving Tom Robinson to a different jail. Atticus did not really like the idea of Tom being moved because he was worried that a mob of people were going to murder him. Atticus and I got into a big fight that same night because I feel like him defending a nigger is a disgrace to our family! Atticus got very upset, and the following night he took his car and drove into town.
The night Atticus drove into town Jem, Scout, and Dill decide to sneak out and follow Atticus. From far distance they all see Atticus sitting outside the Maycomb jail reading a newspaper, and Jem told them they should just leave him alone. Just in that moment they see 4 cars drive into Maycomb and park near the jail, a big group of men get out of the car and tell Atticus to move out of the way, when Atticus says no Scout runs out from her hiding place to notice that the group of men talking to Atticus was the same group that was at their house the night before.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD #4

Journal #4
Chapters 10, 11, & 12
Perspective: Atticus

I am older then most parents. I'm nearly 50 while others are in their 30's-40's. When i get home from work I don't go out hunting or fishing like the other parents, I sit on my couch and read. This often embarrasses Jem and Scout but they don't know that i use to be the best hunter in the country. They kind of got an idea I was able to hunt when I killed that mad dog that was wondering adjacent my house. I shot it from a far distance with just one shot which amused Jem and Scout.
Miss. Dubose doesn’t like me very much. I guess its because I’m defending a nigger in a court case. Every time Jem and Scout walk past her house she always yells mean things. This really bothers Jem, and Scout. Mostly Jem though. I told him just to isolate himself from her because she is very old and sick, but one day Miss. Dubose yelled out, “Atticus is not any better than the niggers and trash he works for!” So when Jem and Scout were walking back from shopping Jem snatched the new baton he had bought for Scout went over to Miss. Dubose’s house and cut the tops of all her flowers, then broke Scouts brand new baton in half! Scout was so perplex. about it all.
Jem’s Birthday had just passed. He is now at the age of 12. He has been acting very different and not wanting to play with Scout anymore. He tells scout to start acting more like a girl, Scout came up to me and asked me if he had gotten a tape worm because his appetite is appalling, he’s very inconsistent, and moody. I just told Scout that she has to be patient with him, and give him some alone time. Scout of course was upset so she was looking forward to seeing Dill that summer, but one day she received a letter in the mail from Dill saying that his mother gotten re-married and he was going to go hunting with him, and build a boat with him so he was not going to Maycomb that summer. Also since I am now a member of the state legislature I am forced to travel to the state capital every day for two weeks. Cal noticed Scout was feeling very lonely and told Scout to come go into the kitchen whenever she was lonely and hangout with her.
The Sunday I was gone Cal decided to take Jem and Scout to a nigger church called First Purchase. The night before she bathed them, and made sure they were nice and clean. She also picked out nice outfits for them to wear. One lady named Lula was being very rude to Cal from bring white people to a black church, but everyone else was very friendly and nice.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD #3

Journal #3
Perspective-Jem
Chapters 8-9

This winter we have had 2 weeks of the coldest weather since 1885! Mrs.Radley died this winter. No one really saw much of her only when she was outside watering her plants. Scout and I figured Boo Radley killed her, but once Atticus got home he told us it was from a natural cause.
The other night Atticus and I woke up to a loud scream. It was Scout, she had thought the world was coming to an end but it was just snow. I have also never seen snow but i had a good idea what it looked like and what it was. Since it snowed in Maycomb Scout and I had no school!
After scout and i finished eating we decided to go outside and play with the snow and try to build a snowman. It was really fun. I also learned something new today. Miss.Maudie told me if you put flowers on your feet it keeps them warm.
It had gotten so cold this winter we had to keep the furnace going 24-7. One night Miss.Maudie's house had gotten light on fire! Dad and i had to get up early and get Scout out of the house. Wile waiting outside someone had draped a blanket over Scouts shoulders. She hadn't noticed it until i asked her where she got it from. We found it it was Boo Radley! Wow this winter has been very interesting so far.

Blog Entry #2 TKAM

Journal #2
Chapters 4-7
Perspective-Scout

The rest of my school days went by very slow, and boring. One day after I got out of school I was running home until I saw something shiny from the corner of my eye. It caught my attention so deeply that I paused, took a deep breath and went back to see what it was. Something around one of the big oak trees at Radley's lot caught my attention. It was some shiny tinfoil sticking out of a knothole. I stuck my hand in and pulled out two pieces of chewing gum. I quickly ran home then examined what I had just discovered. The gum looked fresh, I smelled it and it smelt good. Then I licked it and waited to see what would happen, when nothing happened I knew it wasn't poisonous so I stuck both pieces into my mouth. When Jem came home and caught me chewing the minty gum I had found he got very mad and made me spit it out.
Jem and I were becoming inpatient waiting for summer to come along. Once it did I was so excited to see Dill. Once Dill arrived Jem, Dill, and I played a lot of fun games together. One of the games was we roll one another inside an old tire. One day Dill asked me to marry him! He said that I'm the only girl he would ever love, but hes only 7 years old.

As the summer went on Jem and Dill became a lot closer. I felt like i didn't even fit in anymore so i started hanging out with one of my neighbors. Her name is Miss Maudie Atkinson. She is a great gardener, and cook.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Christina Schaefer Blog post #1
Chapters 1-3
Perspective: Jem

Hello, my name is Jeremy Atticus Finch and I live in a very old town called Maycomb. I have a father named Atticus, he owns a farm called the Finch’s Landing. I also have a younger sister named Jean Louise but we all call her Scout. When I was about 13 years old I got my arm broken. Once it healed I was scared that I would never be able to play football again. I was also very self conscious about my arm. During the summer scout and I played a lot with a boy named Charles Backer Harris, his long name did not suit him so we called him Dill. Dill lived right next ton us at his Aunt Rachel’s house for the summer and should be coming back every summer from now on.
A week after dill left Maycomb, Scout and I started school. I was going onto 5th grade and it was Scout was starting 1st grade. As we walked to school I had to carefully explain to her that during school hours she was not to bother me, approach me, talk about my private life with anyone, follow me during recess, or embarrass me. At first she did not understand that we could only play at home not at school because school is much different then home, but then she understood after her teacher Miss. Caroline patted her on the wrist and made her stand in the corner of the class until noon.
Scout is a very smart girl. I’ve taught her a lot of things that kids in her grade don’t even know. Miss. Caroline thinks my father has taught her all her knowledge, but when my dad comes home from work he is so tired all he does is sit on the couch and read. Miss. Caroline has a new way of teaching so she wants me to stop teaching Scout and let her do it her way.
In Scout’s class there’s a Cunningham boy. His name is William. ON the 1st day of school he did not have any lunch, or any money to buy lunch so I invited him over for some lunch that Calpurnia had made for us. Overall it was a good 1st day at school.

NAME: Christina Schaefer DATE:
BOOK: The Notebook
AUTHOR: Nicholas Sparks PAGES: Finished
Number of pages: 65

Question: If you could change one thing in the book, what would it be? Why would you change it?

Response: If I were to change one thing about this book I would change how the book ended. When I was reading the last chapter I felt that the author wasn't adding as much detail as he was in all of the other chapters. The last chapter was the most boring and very dry. I thought the book was going to end a lot better. It was also disappointing because i read this whole book, and it had a horrible ending.

Question: What character do you like most in this book.

Response: My favorite character in this book is Allie. She is my favorite character because she is very brave, out going, and doesn't let anyone stand in her way. I love how she went back to Noah after all those years of not seeing him. She is a wonderful artist, and does whatever she wants whenever she wants.

Notebook blog 3

Christina Schaefer 2/12/10
Author: Nicholas Sparks Pages read: 70

Question: What do you think is the theme (author’s message) in this book?

Response: I think the author in the book is trying to say that no matter what your 1st love will never go away. I think he is trying to say that because Alli keeps on going back to Noah. Even after 14 years with out hearing from one another and thinking they were over each other, they really weren't. After Alli left Noah's house they were both crying because they will never see each other again.

Question: Do you think you would read another book by this author? Why or why not?
Response: I would read another book by this author, because i love the way he talks. He is very descriptive and when i start reading i don't ever want to put the book down until i know what happens. I love how i can see everything that is going on in the book in my head bright and clear. I can picture everything he is trying to say and can understand everything.

The Notebook- Post 1

NAME: Christina Schaefer DATE: 2/4/10
BOOK: The Notebook
AUTHOR: Nicholas Sparks PAGES: 1-72
TOTAL PAGES THIS WEEK: 72

QUESTION 1: How did what you read today make you feel? Why?

RESPONSE 1: What I read today made me feel happy and sad at the same time. I was happy because the character in the book named Allie went back to visit her first love. The talked all night about everything that had happened between the fourteen years they had without seeing one another. They were laughing and having so much fun like the old days. What had made me sad was that Allie was engaged to a rich man named Lon. Allie and Noah both still loved each other so much, and it was sad that they weren’t together anymore. It was also sad because Noah was left alone when Allie is engaged to a man when she still loves Noah.

QUESTION 2: What do you think about a particular character's actions? Was he/she right or wrong to do that?

RESPONSE 2: I really like what Allie is doing in this book.I think that what she is doing is right, nut wrong at the same time, because she really loves Noah. Allie went to Noah’s house after 14 years when she saw his picture in the local newspaper for building his dream house. They both still loved each other and I think it was very smart for Allie to go to his house. She had a lot of courage and strength to go and show up at Noah’s house out of the blue even though she is engaged.

Blog # 12

Dear Journal,
Today was a bad day. Jacks tribe tried killing me! The first place I hid was in this whole in the ground covered by many bushes and the only way they would have been able to see me was if they looked really close into the whole I was in.

I felt bad for SamnEric because the only reason they were in Jacks tribe was because he kidnapped them and forced them into his tribe. They were being really nice to me at first. They gave me a big chunk of meat and told me to go hide because at sunrise jack was going to go hunting for me. They diddled me into believing i could trust them. They told Jack where i was hidding.
The thing that roger had prepared for me was a spear with two sharp edges. At first I didn’t understand that when SamnEric told me, but now I know what he wanted to do, he was going to kill me, then cut my head of and offer it to the beast. The exact same thing he did to lord of the flies he wanted to do to me.
The way Jack flushed me from my hiding spot was he lit the whole island on fire! When he did that though, I ran, ran, and ran, all the way to the beach where I saw a naval officer. I couldn’t believe my eyes. when I saw him an there was a complete cessation and i was delirious in my running.
Once I stared talking to him Jack ended up on the island because
1. The island was lit on fire
2. He was chasing after me to kill me and offer me to the beastie.
The little boy who wasn’t able to remember his name was Percival.
I ended up taking responsibility for everything that had happened on the island because Jack did not speak up when the naval officer asked us, and because I was the actually leader all along. I felt that the naval officer was very disappointed in us because we were still acting like little kids all along, also because Jack killed Simon and Piggy :(

I think everyone is acting crazy on the island since I have been killed. Jack separated from Ralph’s tribe and made his own. No one at first wanted to be in his tribe. Until after I got killed everyone moved into the dark side, which I now understand better since the lord of the flies explained it to me.I feel the only good people who actually care about getting rescued is Ralph and Piggy. It’s really nice to know that Ralph and Piggy actually cared about me when I got killed. Jacks plan with Maurice and Roger was to send them to attack Piggy and Ralph. Also so they can steal their fire again. Jacks rule for his tribe is only to hunt! That’s all jack cares about is hunting and killing things. He doesn’t care if he is going to get rescued or not. Jacks rule for his tribe is not to leave him or not betray him.

Jack Is Responsibe for Simon's death

Christina Schaefer
A Gift for the Darkness
Blog Entry #8

I feel the person responsible for Simon’s death is Jack. I think that Jack is responsible for Simon’s death because he is part of the dark side in this book. He always wanted to go hunting, and kill things. He did not care about the little ones in the book at all. All that mattered to him was himself and if he was able to kill a pig. Such as in Chapter seven. All the boys were playing a game pretending Roger was a pig. All of the hunters circled around him yelling, “Kill the pig, cut his throat, and bash him in!” They then were poking Roger with the non-sharp end of their spheres. Once they were done with that Jack then said,”Why don’t we have a little one play the pig?” This meant that Jack wanted to sacrifice a little one, and that e does not care about anyone but himself.

Lets kill the beast!

Jack

What sign comes down from the grown up world?
- The sign that came down from the grown up world is the dead guy that flew down from the sky.

Why aren’t the boys aware of it?
- The boys weren’t aware of the beastie because they were sleeping

Why are Sam ‘n Eric so terrified?
- Sam and Eric were really terrified and waxy because they saw the beastie.

How do Sam ‘n Eric describe the beast?
- Sam and Erick described the beast to have claws, wings, and sharp teeth. They also said that the beastie was flailing through the tress chasing after them.

What is the attitude of the boys when going off to look for the beast?
- Their attitudes were all different and diffidently. I wanted everyone to come with me so we can hunt it then kill it. Piggy wanted to stay with the littluns and the shelter. Ralph wanted to come up with a game plan. I was embroiled that we are going to catch it.

Is there really a beast? How do you know?

Yes, there really is a leviathin/beastie. I know there is a beast because Sam and Eric have actually seen it. There's also tracks in this one spot of the island we haven't searched before.

Blog Post #5

Christina Schaefer
Simon
BEAST FROM WATER
Beastie?

Why is an assembly called?
The assembly was called because everyone was being ludicrous and not following the rules.

What concerns are brought up?
The concerns that were brought up in the assembly were; no one helped build the shelters. No one was getting fresh water and putting it into the coconut shells anymore. You can only have one fire going and it’s the on top of the mountain. You can only go to the bathroom on the rocks. The beastie!

How do you feel about those concerns?
I feel the concerns we have are very important. I think they are important because they all have a good meaning behind them. There’s a reason why we talked about them during the assembly.

How are things breaking up (falling apart)?
Things are breaking up because no one has decorum. No one is listening to the rules we have. Everyone does whatever they want whenever they want. Jack and Ralph are always discursive.

Why do you think the littluns cry in their sleep?
I think the reason why the littluns are always lamentation in their sleep is because they miss their moms and dads. They are also very scared of the beastie. Which Jack believes there’s no such thing of a beastie. Why else would they be crying though?

What was Percival Wemys Madison afraid of?
Percival Wemys Madison is scared of the beastie. He says he has seen it before. It comes out during the night, and comes from the water. Jack thinks he’s ludicrous, but I believe him.

What do you think is “the dirtiest thing there is” about human nature?
The dirtiest thing about human nature is being self centered. I think that because what’s the point of being self centered. Everyone always thinks about them self, which is horrible.

Blong Entry #4

Christina Schaefer
Piggy
Stupid Jack!

What things are you having trouble adjusting to on the island that are different from your life at home in England?
- Every thing is different; there isn’t one thing that’s the same, everyone is mean to me, I don’t have my auntie, my skin has gotten very impalpable, and i always need to use blam
.
How do you feel about the littluns?
- I think they are very immature, blatant, and annoying. They aren’t as belligerence as Jack though.

What do they do with their time?
- They never do anything productive with their time. They lay in the sand, build sand castles, and go swimming.

Why do you all paint your faces?
- I didn’t paint my face. Jack and his crew did so they can blend into the plants and tress to make it easier to hunt for the animals.

What does this foreshadow?
- I think that this foreshadows that we are going to be able to get a lot of meat.

How do you feel when your face is painted?
- I haven’t painted my face yet, but if I do I would feel powerful and sneaky.

Why doesn’t the passing ship see you on the island?
- The passing ship didn’t see us on the island because Jack wasn’t being responsible and let it go dead!

Why was the fire allowed to go out?
- The fire went dead because all Jack cared about was looking for the pig. He was in charge of keeping the fire going but he didn’t. Its all his fault we are still on this island.

What other crisis develops regarding the fire?
- Another crisis that happened was I got beat up buy jack and he broke my glasses.

What do you predict will happen next on this island?
- I think Jack is finally going to learn that is not all about him. He isn’t the leader! Ralph is.

Why isnt anyone helping around the island!?

Christina Schaefer
Blog Post # 3
Ralph
“why isn’t anyone helping around here?”
Why is it important/not important to have shelter for the little ones?
- I think it’s important to have shelter for everyone so we can be protected from all of the bugs, and most importantly the beastie.
What are the various jobs assigned to the boys?
-Jack is in charge of the choir which is also the hunters. Piggy is in charge of the rest of the little kids. Such as counting them making sure they are doing something productive, and knowing their names.
Why aren’t they carried out?
- The smaller boys just play and are still acting like small children when parents were still around
What do you feel is the most important task for survival? Explain.
- I think the most important task of survival is to just stay clam, not panic and to keep our hopes up high that someone will come and rescue us.
Describe Simon. (If you are Simon, describe yourself)
- Simon is extremely helpful. He is the only one who helped me today to bluild the huts. He is very tanned from being out in the sun all day with me, and skinny.
What do you think will happen on this island if you don’t get rescued soon?
- I have a feeling everyone will get very annoyed with each other. If Jack doesn’t get any meant soon we will all get sick from not getting the right nutrition we need. We might start dying.
Right now Jack and I are not getting along so well. He always thinks he’s the boss of everyone and acting like he’s the leader. I’m the leader not him! He is so rude to piggy and doesn’t do anything productive around the island.

Christina Esparza Schaefer Blog #2

Do you think this is a good island or a bad island?
-I think this a bad and good island; I think it’s good because everyone is so capering and positive, we have a great leader also. The reason I think its bad is because it’s going to get burnt down since the fire got so out of control. Also because everyone is so errant.
2. What is the beastie?
-Beastie is a snake like animal that everyone thinks is going to attack us. I don’t believe there’ a beastie, but if there is ill kill it.
3. What is your plan for being rescued?
-My plan for being rescued is to stay calm and just hope that someone knows were out here. There really isn’t much more we can do.
4. Do you want to be rescued?
-Of course I want to be rescued! I do not want to be on this island with piggy for the rest of my life and be martyred.
5. How did you start a fire and what happens to the fire?
-We started the fire by using Piggy’s glasses. It worked really well. The bad thing is that the fire keeps on getting bigger and bigger, we can’t even control it!
6. What happened to the little boy with a mark on his face?
-The little boy with the mark on his face ran away and got lost. We think he might get caught in the fire and die.
7. How are you different from all the other boys?
-I think that I’m different then all of the other boys because I’m way more officious then everyone and I tell the truth no matter how much it hurt. I also always want my way. Also because everyone is so ebullience, and I’m not.
8. As you go to bed each night, what is going through your head? Are you afraid, excited, indifferent…? What’s going on inside of your head?
-When I go to bed each night I’m just happy that I’m still alive. I am very scared deep inside of me but I can’t show it. Well get out of here soon.
